Larry Magner lettered four years in baseball and basketball, and three years in football at Jesuit Dallas. As captain of the basketball team his senior year, he broke the School's season scoring record with 394 points (16.4 per game) and managed to score 33 of his team’s 44 points against Waco High School. In 1951, Magner was presented with the coveted Bishop Lynch Award.
After graduation, Magner played basketball and baseball on scholarship for two years at Loyola New Orleans. He won the baseball MVP trophy his sophomore year. He then entered the U.S. Naval Academy and played basketball, baseball and 150-pound football (sprint football) for the Academy. During his senior year he was selected as First Team All-American on the Academy’s championship sprint football team.
Magner served for 30 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1987 as a Navy Captain. In 1983, he was selected as the Jesuit Distinguished Alumnus of the Year.
