John “Shorty” Wall grew up in the Oak Lawn area, and was part of the first class to attend all four of his high school years and graduate from Jesuit Dallas. Wall, who was left-handed, lettered in football, baseball and track. Serving as the Rangers’ starting quarterback, Wall was captain of the football team his senior year. He was awarded the Robert E. Lee Award in 1943 and the Bishop Lynch Award in 1945, with both honors meant for students who were most reflective of the Jesuit spirit.

Wall joined the Marine Corps toward the end of his senior year, but the war quickly ended, and Wall went to the University of San Francisco on an athletic scholarship. He played two years of football at USF before the School disbanded its program. Wall eventually found his way back to Jesuit, where he served as an assistant coach on the School’s undefeated 1949 team. Re-entering the service in 1950, Wall became a fighter pilot for the Marines, and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
