Rev. Julius J. May, S.J., a New Orleans native, came to Jesuit Dallas in 1949. Chemistry and physics were his specialties as were ham radio and certainly sports. He served as the head of the science department and received a government grant in physics to study sound waves. Fr. May had his own ham radio station at the old school on Oaklawn. He was promoted from assistant athletic director to athletic director in 1953 and later became athletic moderator in 1958. Fr. May coached the B basketball team and was the freshman football moderator of the Lettermen’s Club. He formed the famous “Black Derbies” spirit group in 1959. Fr. May played a large role in the formation of the TCIL. He was also very active in the American Legion Summer Baseball program.
In 1966, Fr. May moved to Jesuit Shreveport and was named athletic director and head of the science department. From Shreveport, May went to Jesuit El Paso where he organized the science department.
Ever popular in Dallas athletic circles, Fr. May will always be remembered for his priestly concern for the Jesuit boys. His lectures about science were demanding, but talks about dating and drinking also hit home. His management style was “close to the vest,” but effective.
