In a sparkling four-year tennis career, Bobby Matthews was part of Jesuit Dallas teams that never lost a dual match, winning three Metro, TCIL District, and TCIL State Championships. Matthews won a pair of state doubles titles with fellow Hall of Famer Larry Pascal ’84 and won a state title in singles his senior year. At the conclusion of his senior year, Matthews received the Jesuit Scholar-Athlete Award.

A six-time NCAA Division III All-American in singles and doubles, Matthews enjoyed a great collegiate career at Washington & Lee University. He helped guide the Generals to four consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships as well as the 1988 NCAA National Championship. Mathews won an NCAA Division III doubles championship with partner John Morris in 1989, and on two different occasions (1987 and 1989), he advanced to the national quarterfinals in singles play. Matthews graduated from Washington & Lee as the University’s all-time career wins leader (96) and was part of more team wins than any other player in program history (56).
