Competing in footbll, basketball and track, Mike Madigan was an all-around athlete at Jesuit, but left his legacy as a superior athlete in track & field. As a senior captain in football, he was voted Catholic Player of the Year and was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player.
At the 1964 TCIL Outdoor State Championships, Madigan won the 100 and 220-yard dashes,anchored the winning sprint relay team and won both the long jump and high jump events. He was the top-ranked high school jumper in the state in 1964 for both public and private schools. That same year, he established a Jesuit-Sheaner Relays meet record in the long jump after covering a distance of 24'5".
Madigan attended SMU on a full athletic scholarship and immediately displayed his ability by winning the Southwest Conference broad jump championship competition his freshman and sophomore years.
