As quarterback and safety, Bill Murphy helped lead Jesuit Dallas to the TCIL state title game in 1961, while he also served as a two-year starting catcher for Ranger baseball. Transferring from a public high school after his freshman year and not being able to play his senior year, Murphy devised a plan to remain an instrumental part of the football program.

By becoming a scout for the team, Murphy would memorize the opposition’s plays and then run the scout team offense and defense under the direction of Gary Pasqua during the ensuing practices. At the end of his senior year, receiving every vote but one, his own, Murphy was selected as the team’s most inspirational player. After a distinguished military career, Murphy became a longtime football official, basketball referee and baseball umpire in the TCIL.
