Kenneth Shaw was recognized as the TCIL's top-ranked cross country runner during the fall of 1966 and the area's top distance runner in the Spring of 1967. Shaw posted the second-best time in the 1966 Cross Country State Championship Meet of all the five divisions entered. The public and private school runners were entered together for a final Texas High School State Meet. Shaw won first place for Jesuit in the 4A Division. Only Robert Gonzales of Falfurrias in another division bettered Shaw’s time.
Shaw set new Jesuit Dallas records in the mile and two mile events. He was All-TCIL and TCIL state meet champion, and a three-time letterman at Jesuit in track and cross country. He became the first TCIL competitor along with Jesuit’s Tom Booker who was Dallas’ best high school discus thrower, to be invited to the public school state Qualifiers Meet in Corpus Christi where they both excelled.
Shaw accepted a full track scholarship to SMU where he was a three-time letterman at SMU in track and cross country. He helped the Mustangs to four consecutive victories at the Southwest Conference Cross Country Championships. After collegiate competition, he ran with the Oregon Track Club with several Olympic members, including distance legend Steve Prefontaine.
