A two-year starter in both baseball and football, Jerry Ryan would go on to win TCIL All-State accolades in both sports. As a member of Jesuit’s grid iron program, Ryan was part of a team that combined to go 19-3 while winning a pair of district championships as well as an appearance in the state finals. He played on both ends of the field, earning TCIL All-District, All-Metro, and TCIL All-State honors. After the final game of his senior season, Ryan was selected as the Dallas Morning News Offensive Player of the Week.

Ryan was also Jesuit’s starting shortstop in 1965 and 1966. He was named team MVP after both seasons and was elected captain prior to his senior campaign. That year, he earned TCIL All-District, All-Private, and TCIL All-State plaudits.

Ryan was the recipient of a football scholarship to Sul Ross State University, where he was a four year starter in the defensive secondary. The 1966 team was ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of the season in the NAIA national poll, while true to form, he was selected as the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week following his final collegiate game.
