Joel Sharp lettered in football and baseball while at Jesuit, serving as captain for both in his senior year. As quarterback, he was selected First Team All-State and led the Rangers to the 1986 TCIL State Championship. Serving as the team's starting third baseman on the baseball team, he was selected First Team All-State and led the Rangers to the 1987 TCIL State Baseball Championship. He was also selected as the captain of the Fina Academic All-State Team.
Sharp was Jesuit’s first recipient of the coveted Davey O’Brien Award as top quarterback in the State of Texas and voted the most outstanding high school athlete of 1987. Along with this award, Joel also received a $20,000 college scholarship to the school of his choice.
He chose Princeton University where he played varsity football. During his early years at Princeton, Sharp served as back-up to Jason Garrett. He then took over as starting quarterback and captained Princeton to the 1989 Ivy League Championship, the program's first in 20 years.
