Rufe Brewton was a four-year football and three-year baseball letterman at Jesuit. As a junior, he was voted All-State in baseball at first base, and served as captain of the Rangers in his senior year. Brewton enjoyed a successful four-year baseball career at the University of Dallas.

Returning to Jesuit in 1958 as a part-time football, basketball and baseball coach, Brewton joined the faculty full-time in 1962. During his tenure with the Blue and Gold, Brewton was the head varsity baseball coach and assistant varsity football coach for over 20 years (1964-67 and 1980-97). His varsity baseball record is 308 wins, 129 losses and 10 ties with TCIL State Championships in 1983, 1985 and 1987. Whether as a player, a coach or in the press box, Brewton was involved in numerous state championships at Jesuit, including the first TCIL football title in 1954.

During the 1970s, Brewton coached swimming at TCU and was voted Southwest Conference Swimming Coach of the Year in 1973.
