A three-year letterman in basketball as a player, George Coelen was captain, leading scorer, assists leader, team MVP, and TCIL All-District as a junior, and then repeated those same honors as a senior, while adding all-state and All-Greater Dallas honors to his resume. George earned a scholarship to Spring Hill College, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Hilltoppers.

In 1971 George returned to the alma mater to begin his teaching and coaching career. He coached freshman basketball, and in the fall of 1972, began leading the freshman football team, winning three district championships in his five-year tenure. In 1973 he became the JV basketball coach and took over the varsity position in 1978, guiding the Rangers to five state championships and 270 victories over the next 16 years.

From 1983-92, every player who played in the basketball program for at least one year played on a team that advanced to the TCIL championship game. In 1983, after winning his first state title, George coached the only private school player to that point to ever be recognized as the Dallas Morning News Player of the Year (Gary Swain).
