Fred Schaefer was Dallas’ top high school sprinter in 1957 in both public and private school competition and was considered one of the state’s top track stars. He was the first Jesuit and TCIL athlete to win a medal at the Texas Relays. At the inaugural TCIL State Championships in 1957, he won first place in all five events in which he competed and led Jesuit to a first place team finish.

Upon graduation, Schaefer accepted a full athletic scholarship to SMU. He subsequently transferred to East Texas State University where he became a nationally recognized sprinter finishing no worse than third place in all national sprint competitions during his collegiate career. He ran on relay teams that won first place at the Texas Relays, Drake Relays and Kansas Relays for three straight years. In 1996, Schaeffer was inducted into the Texas A&M-Commerce/East Texas State University Athletic Hall of Fame.
