Tim Tehan started his athletic career at Jesuit Dallas with a successful football season, serving as quarterback and captain of the freshman team. Ultimately, Tehan made his mark in basketball, where he was a three-year starting point guard.

Tehan was named Sophomore of the Year in 1969, and was selected to the TCIL All-District squads in 1970 and 1971. His teams managed to win three consecutive district championships (1969-71), two TCIL state titles (1970-71), one state runner-up, and three Knight of Columbus basketball championships. The 1970 state championship team produced one of the most successful seasons in Jesuit lore, posting a 32-6 overall record and winning its last 23 games, including a 52-51 victory over Central Catholic (San Antonio) in the state title game. That year at the state tournament, Tehan was awarded the Sportsmanship Award and sank a three-quarter court shot just before the halftime buzzer that ultimately proved the difference.

Tehan also ran track at Jesuit, winning the mile at the district meet in 1971 while finishing fourth at the TCIL State Championships. In addition to his athletic success, Tehan was the 1971 class valedictorian. He was awarded an academic scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated with highest honors in 1975.
