Jerry Pettibone lettered for three years in football, baseball and track at Jesuit Dallas. He was a two-time All-State running back, leading Jesuit to back-to-back TCIL State Championships in 1956 and 1957.
Pettibone attended Oklahoma University, playing one year at running back under Bud Wilkinson. He got his coaching start in 1962 as a graduate assistant under Wilkinson at Oklahoma. After a stint in the Army, Pettibone returned to OU where he was assistant coach & recruiting coordinator from 1971-78 under Barry Switzer and Chuck Fairbanks with a cumulative record of 72-6-2 that included six Big Eight and two National Championships.
Moving to the University of Nebraska, Pettibone was the split end coach and recruiting coordinator for three years under Tom Osborne. At Texas A&M University, from 1982-1984, he was assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator, and named the No. 1 Recruiter in America by Sports Illustrated.
From 1984-1991, Pettibone was Head Coach at Northern Illinois University, becoming the third winningest coach in school history and equaling the program's best single season record. He then served as head coach at Oregon State University from 1991-96 and was named 1993 co-runner up for the NCAA Division 1-A Coach of the Year by Sports Illustrated.Â
