Gary Swain was a hard hitting, defensive third baseman for Jesuit. He gave up a total of five fielding errors in three full seasons. He was named TCIL All-State after his junior and senior years, and helped lead the Rangers to the state championship in 1983.
Swain also made his mark in basketball. As a three-year starter, three-time All-State selection and two-time Most Valuable Player, he scored more than 1,400 points in his varsity career and finished second in scoring in the entire DFW Metroplex his senior year with a 24.5 per game average. He capped off his high school career by leading Jesuit to its first TCIL State Championship in 12 years, and was named Metroplex Player of the Year by The Dallas Morning News, the first and at the time only private school player to ever receive this award.
Swain received a full basketball scholarship to Creighton University, where he was a four-time letterman. He finished his career 17th on the School’s all-time list in scoring with 1,254 career points. In his senior year, Swain was Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference, averaging 17.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
